Group Meetings

It routinue, get to work, open firefox. Sign onto AIM with meebo and check my email. So I get an email from Yo-Hsuan saying that there will be a group meeting today at 1:30 at Academia Sinica. ok not a problem. continue reading.

"Dr. Lin would like you to give a presentation of your research today" Say what?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I started freaking out, my VTC did not go great because Dr. Lin asked alot of deep biochem aspect questions about my research that I could not answer. oh man. He is going to make me look like a fool in front of my newly-made friends. oh no. During my VTC, PMarkwick was there to cover me during the VTC, but he is half way around the world now! ok. got to stop freaking out and start working on my presentation. I went through my project proposal powerpoint presentation and took out stuff that I really could not explain very deeply, but yet, left enough for people to understand the jist of things (a very smart move that I learned from MSiy).

Dr. Lin comes in about a half and hour and tells me about the group meeting and that there was going to be some sort of dinner tonight afterwards. cool, but wait. he goes on and says he would like me to make a presentations (ok. i have gotten over the initial *yikes* for that), and that he would like me to present an article for JOURNAL CLUB!!!!!!!!!!! I thought I was done with that after I left Dr. Li. AHHHHHHHHH. I didn't do so great for journal clubs with Dr. Li, but it was ok, as my audience was all second/third year undergraduates. Now you want me to present something that I don't know about to grad/Ph. D/post doc students?. This is going to be bad. I dread the day already.

So A-Yeh and I take the MRT/bus to Academia Sinica and proceed to the 3rd floor (where the meeting usually is) for the group meeting. But he didn't read his email, it was actually on the 7th floor. After being lost for about 20 mins, we thought we were going to be very late. Turns out, Dr. Lin hadn't arrived yet and we ended up waiting another 20ish minutes for him.

Needless to say, as the others were presenting, I was PRAYING HARD that Dr. Lin would forget about me. No such luck. Actually the presentation didn't go too badly, and asked questions about me instead. *whew* It did feel kind of awkward that I did my presentation in English, since everyone else presented in Mandarin (I would have died if I had to do that. my Mandarin is decent, but not decent enough to start talking about docking)

So after our group meeting, we headed over to a very, very nice scenery room for dinner. A fairly new building of Academia Sinica. Apparently, the dinner was for a professor that was leaving, and introduction of new professors and exchange students into the school (in a particular department that I don't know about).

I didn't take pictures of the food, cause I didn't want to look weird, I did ask to take a group picture of our table.
I did take one of the food table after dinner when everything was gone though. LoL (most people had left by then)
They had KTV set up for anyone who wanted to sing and we kept pushing each other to do it. I almost convinced Dr. Lin to sing, but he didn't. He and A-Yeh was going to sing together, but couldn't really find any male, male duets or songs that they both know. A-Yeh chose a song that he and another lab member (I don't know his name) was going to sing, only he got flaked on. During the bus ride back, A-yeh told me he felt "owned" AHAH. He did a pretty good job though, even though he said he did bad tonight. We plan to go KTVing sometime =) I have never gone before and would really like to try.

A-Yeh and me! (I did take candid shots of the lab members, but for their sake, I won't put them up)

卡拉OK!
>.<
